Oh my. I might be in trouble. I am still just loving my most recent makeover on my kitchen table, and I knew even before I did the makeover that the black upholstery on my Parson chairs just wasn’t working. I really only bought those chairs because they were the style I wanted and figured I could recover them later. Well later it is.

My husband and I walked into Pier 1 this weekend, and he told me that he instantly thought, “We’ll probably be going home with those.”

And we did. Leave with four of them, that is. Just beautiful. Love the pattern, love the color, LOVE the pleats on the bottom. Love, love, love. So here’s my problem.

They’re too big {tear}. Now I pulled & tucked & adjusted…and basically, to really make them fit, I’d have to take them almost completely apart and then sew them back together, just in a smaller form. And when I say me, I possibly mean the sweet lady who does my alterations. Still don’t have a sewing machine. And unless one of you has a killer suggestion {puuuleeze!} that might be my one solution.

But the other thought weighing on my brain is Are these worth it to fix? Each cover is about $50, and while I know a few friends who would loan me their sewing machine–is it more trouble than it’s worth to alter these myself? And will paying someone else to alter it just push these chair covers over the top?? I am swooning over the pleated skirt, the pattern, the two-tone color on the back. I might just be so in love, it’s fix at all costs {no honey, I didn’t really mean that!}….So, what’s your advice?? Really…I’d sure love to know!!

I would show them to the lady who does your alterations and ask her to give you and estimate for the work she would need to do to make them fit your chairs. That way, you could make a more informed decision. I think that the pleated skirt (which is quite fetching, and I see why you love it) would make the alterations time intensive. You may not love them enough to add the alterations cost to the purchase price. There’s my two cents!

BTW, I love what you did with the table!

Here’s a thought: Get some heavy quilt batting and wrap it around the back and seat. It could make the upholstered areas “larger” or “fuller” and the slip covers would fit better.

Oh no! They’re so cute! I hope you figure out a solution, but it seems to me that it would be easier to buy fabric you love and have them made, than tearing apart ones that are already made only to resew them. Of course, if this fabric is IT (and it is awesome), then it probably is worth it to make them smaller.

I think adding some batting to the chairs is a great idea. It would definitely fill them out without risk of doing anything permanent to the chairs (and it’d be fairly inexpensive).

But, if you REALLY love them, I’d try washing and drying one on high heat. Just try one in case it doesn’t work! You’d be out $50 cause you couldn’t return it, but they’re so cute it might be worth it.

Laura–that is a great idea!! I think I might check out that option before I swing by alternations with a chair in tow.

Thanks Mrs. S!! I think the pleats would make it more work… especially since it has cording (?) around the top of it too.

Hmmm.. I hadn’t thought of that either Carrie… I just might try that too!!

[...] week I wrote about these chair covers that I got from Pier 1. It was love at first sight, so imagine my disappointment when I got home [...]
