While we were visiting family, my war buff of a husband realized that Gettysburg was an hour or two away and had to go. Because I grew up near this famous battlefield, I had already visited more than once and was required to memorize the Gettysburg Address in school. Apparently that’s just if you go to school in central PA.
The whole area really is so picturesque and stunning. The orchards, rolling hills, farms…it’s beautiful. While we were walking around, listening to the CD while driving around Gettysburg, I couldn’t help but remember parts Denzel’s speech in “Remember the Titans”.
Anybody know what this place is? It’s Gettysburg. This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty-thousand men died right here on this field…fighting the same fight that we’re still fighting amongst ourselves today. This green field right here painted red–bubbling with blood of young boys. Smoke, hot lead going right through their bodies. Listen to their souls men. I killed my brother with malice in my heart, hatred destroyed my family. You listen, take a lesson from the dead. If we don’t come together, right now on this hollowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were.
If you get the chance, Gettysburg is worth the visit. A beautiful countryside rich with sacrifice, history and a insight into a major turning point in America’s Civil War.
